Rule of thumb

Rule of thumb: Any chapter or book with a title similar to “Unleashing the power of (blah)” will be utterly useless. It will in fact be negative learning, as you will need to purge your mind of anything you read from it.

(The same goes for “Learn X in 20 minutes”, or whatever we’re down to these days. Learn Java in 20 Femtoseconds? Yeah, you can totally do that.)

I think I could build a nice cottage of that sort of book, which overwhelmingly populates the “computer” section at the local used-book store. If only they were priced closer to their actual value, rather than the absurd one dollar being asked.

  3. Er… gentle. You don’t have to be Jewish, I guess. But you can be!

Yeah, I have to agree. You’ll get a lot more mileage out the ‘Manga Guide to ….”.

That said, what if there was a “Learn Ten Rules of Thumb in Ten Minutes”? Some things lend themselves to short tutorials.

I seem to recall something along the lines of “100 Zen Koans (and their answers) for the One Minute Manager” a few years (decades?) back. Can’t recall if it was a joke or not.
